We Hit The Ground Running! The Thurman Perry Foundation January Newsletter
This is pretty much the last day to acceptably say it, so HAPPY NEW YEAR! We are so amazed that nearly 1,000 amazing changemakers have subscribed to our monthly newsletter. It’s 2024 and we’ve kicked this year into high gear already. We are actively planning the foundation’s first in-person event. As an organization that launched during the height of the covid-19 pandemic, in order to ensure the safety of our staff and program beneficiaries, we did not plan or hold any in-person events. That will be changing on April 20, 2024 when we host Mother’s Day 365: A Jazz Luncheon & Fundraiser Honoring System Impacted Mothers!
The purpose of the event is to celebrate women across the U.S. who work day and night for the benefit of women and children impacted by the American carceral system. This is also our opportunity to raise much needed funds for the Mother’s Day 365 program, which provides rent and mortgage payment relief in the form of direct-giving to deserving moms and soon-to-be moms impacted by incarceration year round. In May of 2023, unfortunately, we had to pause the program due to lack of funding. We want to restart the program in time to begin awarding winners again for Mother’s Day 2024. At the end of this email, you will find the campaign link for our Jazz Luncheon fundraiser. Our goal is to raise $30,000, and as of now, we are 10% of the way there. When completed, we will have enough funding to run MD365 in 2024.
Also, The Perry ‘Second Chances’ Scholarship closes in 27 DAYS! The 4th cycle of the scholarship, which will see us cross $100,000 in scholarship funding awarded, ends at 11:59PM PT on February 27, 2024. The award has doubled this year to be worth $4,000 as we try to make a bigger impact in our recipients educational journeys. If you know a currently or formerly incarcerated woman or daughter of an incarcerated person pursuing her education at an accredited 2-4 year college, university, or trade school, tell her to go to https://theperryscholarship.

We could not do what we do without you!
The beginning of the year is a time to feel hopeful and determined. It makes us feel as if the days, weeks, and months to come are filled with possibility, opportunity, and success. Thank you for joining us on this journey and letting us know that we are not alone in our fight to create an equitable world for women & girls impacted by incarceration. Your belief in us keeps us going.
P.S. Tickets for Mother’s Day 365: A Jazz Luncheon & Fundraiser Honoring System Impacted Mothers will go on sale on Friday, February 2, 2024 at midnight ET. We would love for you to join us!
Sincerely,
Gabrielle A. Perry, MPH
