Here’s What We’ve Been Up To! The Thurman Perry Foundation June Newsletter
Nice to see you again! It’s been a few months since our last newsletter and we can’t wait to show you the hard work we’ve been doing while we’ve been gone. In the last 3 months:
- We expanded our Girl Code program to a 6th facility, located in New York State, that houses over 500 incarcerated women who will be receiving a shipment of organic menstrual pads from our manufacturing partner Aunt Flow.
- We completed the 4th cycle of The Perry ‘Second Chances’ Scholarship, awarding 10 system impacted women and girls with $4,000 one-time scholarships to help further their education. This brings us to $100,000 in scholarships awarded in 4 years.
- We held our sold out first in-person event in New Orleans to fundraise for our Mother’s Day 365 initiative, and presented the inaugural Sisterhood of Service Awards ceremony. Thanks to your generosity, MD365 is back on July 15th!
Read on to learn all about what we’ve accomplished this quarter.
P.S. We’ll be sending a special edition newsletter to introduce you to the newest class of the PSCS scholarship. Don’t miss it!
We could not do what we do without you!
Everything that has happened over the last 3 months is a testament to the power of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. When we planted the seeds of this now national organization, we started with just one program, The Perry ‘Second Chances’ Scholarship. We gave away two scholarships worth $1,000 each raised from my own friends, family, and savings. Now, with the funding received from The Sunshine Lady Foundation, we will be able to ensure that we continue providing for the higher education of women and girls impacted by incarceration. We have multiple years of graduates who tell us that they attribute a part of their success to our help.
Thanks to you, our TPF community, we are restarting our Mother’s Day 365 program and will be able to provide rent and mortgage assistance to system-impacted mothers and soon-to-be moms next month. With the help of our amazing friends at New Hour, who always advocate on our behalf from across the country, we will be able to serve the women of Albion Correctional Facility. Our mission is to impact at least 10,000 women and girls by 2030. With the current expansion, we will be crossing that this year. On behalf of the 10,000 women and girls who have benefitted from our work and your support, thank you. We can’t say that enough.
Sincerely,
Gabrielle A. Perry, MPH
