A big win for formerly incarcerated people throughout the State of Louisiana as the Louisiana Housing Corporation insitutes a new policy regarding fair housing and tenant screening. The new policy will affect 60,000 existing housing units throughout the state and all new units created after the policy. This policy will ensure that people returning home from being incarcerated have safe stable housing for themselves and their families and aims to reduce discrimination among Louisiana’s state subsidized housing providers.

“Almost 50% of all adults in Louisiana have a criminal record. Likely an even higher percentage of adults applying for affordable housing through LHC’s programs also have conviction records. According to the policy, widespread racial and ethnic disparities in the criminal legal system require housing providers to ensure that their screening policies do not have an unjustified discriminatory effect.” (Big Easy Magazine, 2021)
